well, coming from the band/orchestra scene i say hang out with singers. they can put you up to speed quickly.

If the school you attend offers a semester or two of Vocal take it! In such a class you should learn to not only sing in unison and in parts, but learn how to read and write notation. That is the first step in understanding and appreciating musicianship.

Without that year of Vocal I took in high school I might still be struggling with songs I’d always wanted to play, but was stuck because I couldn’t read music.
